Personality[]
Null is an eager and well-meaning companion to Copen, Lola, and Kohaku, offering them all sorts of advice and information about the world, Workers, the Creator, and the Mother Computer. She always seeks to do her best to be of use to the three. Kohaku even goes so far as to ask if she's an angel.
Part of this may stem from her feelings of inadequacy as a result of not receiving a life's mission compared to other Workers.
History[]
Background[]
Null was created the same way as any other Worker; an inner frame injected with nanomachine-like programmable particles known as Pix. However, where most Workers are given a mission that they will carry out to the end of their service life, Null was never given one due to a system error at the time of her creation. She escaped scrapping thanks to some other Workers who raised her like a daughter, and gave her the name "Null" for her endless potential, though she constantly worries whether a "defective product" like her can really live up to that.
Luminous Avenger iX 2[]
Intro and Pillar Outskirts[]
Null is conveniently right there at the spot where the wormhole spits out Copen, Lola, and Kohaku into the world of the Grave Pillar. Introducing herself, Null asks if they are "human".
During the months-long timeskip, Null helps the trio out by giving them shelter, helping them get food for Kohaku, and informing them about the world, including the Grave Pillar and the Mother Computer at the top, who may help them get home. She also provides data that acts as the basis for Copen's Razor Wheel and Break Shift.
Soon after Copen and Lola fight their way to the Grave Pillar's entrance, Kohaku and Null catch up after trailing behind. When Kohaku becomes flustered over the entrance's barrier turning off, Null guesses that Kohaku's nature as a human caused the Pillar to react, given how it was made by the Creator as a gift to humanity.
Conversational Partner[]
Given how dangerous the Pillar's security is, Null waits with Kohaku at the entrance, where the security robots are not programmed to enter. There, the two spend their time talking, and even bring Copen and Lola into a few chats. Null is curious about humans and the world the three came from, so she asks Kohaku to teach her a few things, though she has some trouble understanding some of Kohaku's out-of-context explanations (and even some with context).
At some point, Null tells the three about her past, and how she was never given a purpose on creation. Encouraged by their responses, Null declines Copen's offer to program her with a mission, stating she'd like to try just a little longer to find one herself.
When Ypsilon shows up and kidnaps Kohaku, Null continues to offer Copen encouragement to reach the Mother Computer and save her.
Entrance to Top Floor[]
When Ypsilon destroys the teleporter leading to the Mother Computer, Null steps in saying she has a way. Gathering Pix, Null is impaled by several cables from the teleporter. When asked what she's doing, Null states that she's uploading the teleporter's program into herself in order to salvage it. Ypsilon berates her recklessness as the transfer would erase her own personality data, but she simply responds that since she is empty inside, or "Null", only she could even hope to handle the sheer amount of data contained in the teleporter. Even as Copen and Ypsilon clash for the final time, Null doesn't stop the transfer, occasionally convulsing as her systems struggle to hold all the data.
With Ypsilon's defeat, Copen finally has time to see to Null. Null tells him not to worry, as she will simply become one with the Pillar and teleporter, and she is glad she could be of service to humanity. With those words, the last vestiges of her consciousness are deleted as the data transfer finalizes. What remains is merely an automaton that can warp Copen to the Hanging Gardens where the Mother Computer resides. Promising to carry her heart with them, Copen and Lola make their final preparations to save Kohaku.
Normal End[]
While Null makes no direct appearance, it's strongly implied by Kohaku that Null is the one who made the wormhole leading to their home world.
After the credits roll, the scene returns to Null's body in the teleporter room. With the words "Thank you everyone. Take care--", the game returns to the title screen.
Hard Mode and True Ending[]
Upon playing the game on Hard Mode and clearing Entrance to Top Floor, the Creator causes Pix to begin flowing from Null's body to Copen's Razor Wheel, as he disappears into thin air, asking Copen to stop the Mother Computer. In a flash of light, Null is fully repaired and awoken. Whatever the Creator did caused the teleporter's program to transfer to the Razor Wheel and restore Null's consciousness and personality data. Null herself, while slightly disoriented, tells the two that she was watching their progress and determination from within the Pillar's system, and offers her continued support. Copen and Lola are happy to have Null rejoin them in their quest to save Kohaku.
After Copen destroys the Mother's mainframe, Null wishes for Mother to rest in peace, silently praying as Mother and the Creator's spirits disappear into the heavens.
When the trio try to figure out a new way home, Null explains that thanks to the teleporter's program being installed into Copen's Razor Wheel, he can use the Wheel to open a wormhole himself, theorizing that the Creator used the same technology and programs to travel to another world. Glad that she could be of service, Null remarks that perhaps this means goodbye, and can't help but be saddened. That's when Copen invites Null to join them and find her "mission" together. Whether in the Grave Pillar world, their world, or any other world, her limitless possibilities could be realized anywhere. Null is overcome with emotion, barely even able to answer.
The last scene is of Null standing just behind Copen, Lola and Kohaku, the three of them looking back with welcoming expressions before the wormhole. While there is no actual dialogue from here on, it's strongly implied that Null accepts and follows the trio back to their world.

Music director Ryo Kawakami's track notes:[3]
- Null ~A Pure Color~
It’s the theme of Null, the girl Worker that they met in the desert. To express how pure she is and how she lacks a goal, it’s a track that feels both mechanical and transparent. The melody line has a neutral composition that feels like it could be either a major key or a minor key.
- Null ~Recollection~
It’s the track that plays when Null explains her origins. “Not having a purpose” should be something very harsh and beyond imagination for the inhabitants of this world… I used the tones of a synthesizer, playing piano and violin backwards to make a sad and lonely track.
- Null ~When Resolution Fulfills~
The track of the scene where Null finds her “role”. I put the focus on “resolution” and “decision” rather than sadness, and purposely made it with a strong tune. Parts like these are what make the tracks of Null and Ypsilon hard to make. It took a lot of trial and error before I reached the shape I wanted to create. Thanks to the patient programmers who helped me with this task.
Trivia[]
- As most Luminous Avenger iX 2 characters appear to correspond to Mighty No. 9 characters, it's sometimes speculated that Null corresponds to Ray. Both are defective robots lacking a central component, have names that mean or reference "nothing," and Ray's symbol is a nullsign. There is very little resemblance beyond this, however.
