Image Pulse

Image Pulse (過去の幻影イマージュパルス) is a gameplay system introduced in Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 as a replacement for previous games' Equipment systems. A power born from Gunvolt's Azure Striker and Kirin's Radiant Fetters combining, Gunvolt's memories of friends and enemies are given form and sealed in talismans to assist them. Image Pulses are mainly gained by collecting Image Chips (記憶のかけらイマージュジップ) in stages.

Types of Image Pulses[]

Images Pulses (IP) are divided across three categories: Skill, Passive, and Song.

Skill Image Pulses can be used by Kirin to summon characters for attacks or to provide support, and can't be used as Gunvolt (although continuous effects may carry over to him). Four can be equipped at a time, and each has its own cooldown time (CT) before it may be used again with some exceptions. A Skill IP in a cooldown state can't be switched out. Bosses have weaknesses to Skill IPs of certain characters, much like Copen's EX Weapons. Like EX Weapons, Skill IPs do not yield Kudos from damaging foes, but unlike EX Weapons they do not have any associated Kudos bonuses to compensate. Note that certain Skill IPs can only be used once per stage, but retrying from a checkpoint allows them to be used again at the cost of losing the current accumulated Kudos.

Passive Image Pulses strictly provide support effects or ability buffs. Most of them affect only Kirin since for instance, Gunvolt never takes damage. How many Passive IPs can be equipped depends on Kirin's level, with the maximum of 8 slots being available at level 60.

Song Image Pulses dictate which Lumen songs may play at the 1st and 2nd Kudos levels, but equipping Lumen will prevent playing any song at that level (or above). Songs played at the 3rd level (Traces), right after "Djinn's Wish" (Boundless Myth) and "Anthem" (Reincarnation Fateful) cannot be altered. These 3 songs are also the only ones without any associated Song IP, and thus cannot be played outside these specific circumstances.

Image Pulses are divided into 1 star (Normal) and 3 star (Rare) categories. Rare Image Pulses often start with a weaker effect than their Normal counterpart, but can be upgraded with credits once to reach the same effect, and upgraded for a second time for an even stronger effect. This is the only use of credits in Gunvolt 3.

DLC Image Pulses follow the same rules as non-DLC IPs, and can be distinguished by a magenta-striped border with sparkles.

On Other Modes[]

On Very Hard mode, most Passive IPs do not take effect; the exceptions are Carrera, "The Magnetic Avarice" Carrera, Gunvolt (Hard Black), Gunvolt (Zero Vermilion), GV?, and "Primal Dragon" Gunvolt. As for Skill IPs, each can only be used once per stage, and their uses are not restored from retrying at a checkpoint (unlike with one-time-use Skill IPs). Instead, players have to restart the mission from the beginning.

Most Passive IPs are also disabled when playing as Kirin XX or Special GV from equipping "Primal Dragon" Gunvolt, with the same list of exceptions as Very Hard mode.

In D-nizer Mode, Skill Image Pulses are not available at all, and Passive Image Pulses are replaced with Accessories that have similar effects and are purchasable with credits earned in that mode. All Song Image Pulses unlocked in the Main Story can be used directly in D-nizer mode.

Obtaining Image Pulses[]

Upon completion of each mission, Image Pulses are distributed based on the number of Image Chips found, with each pair of Image Chips granting one IP. An additional one is granted if all Image Chips on that stage have been found as "Completion Bonus", and another one is granted as "Resurrection Bonus" if Djinn's Wish activates.

Each mission has its own pool of obtainable Image Pulses that also differs between difficulty. As a result, certain IPs can be commonly found in several stages while some can be exclusive to one or two stages. While the IPs obtained are chosen randomly from the pool, there seems to be always at least a new one if available. In addition, duplicated IPs are directly converted into 5000 credits (Normal) or 10000 credits (Rare).

Some missions in Standard Task will grant specific IPs when first completed, although this will not be indicated in advance. All missions except Special Missions in Demanding Task and Merciless Task will also grant specific IPs when first completed; these IPs are shown on the mission selection menu. In addition, all missions (except the intro mission, Futures Institute) have the Song IP for one of the fourteen songs from GV1 and GV2 available, alongside one of the five IPs for GV3 songs as well as the "mute" Song IP.

Other Information[]

  • There is a secret ending that can only be viewed by collecting 150 Image Pulses, appearing after the result screen of the final mission when the true ending is achieved.
  • Certain Skill Image Pulses are single-use regardless of difficulty:
    • The Djinn
    • "Resurrection" Elise
    • "Astral Order" Moebius
    • "Child of Hope" Moebius
  • The most powerful attack from a Skill Image Pulse is "The Adept Slayer" Copen's Greed Snatcher bullet, capable of depleting a third of most bosses' health per level. In other words, at max level, it can defeat most bosses in a single hit. The drawback is that, like other Skill Image Pulse attacks, the Greed Snatcher yields no Kudos. It is advisable to only upgrade this IP once so that boss SP skills can be skipped to for practice.
  • Using the Skill Image Pulse The Djinn when the final boss is activating Astral Order will cause the fight to be unable to proceed until the effect of the skill runs out.
  • The Djinn SIP does not negate the damage from Asimov's Voltaic Buster.
  • Equipping the Mute Song Image Pulse will prevent Joule's Passive Image Pulse from taking effect.
    • Accumulating 1000 Kudos during Djinn's Wish will usually cause the song to switch from Boundless Myth to a Lumen Kudos song, but this will not occur if Mute is equipped. Prior to version 1.3.0 of the game, due to a bug, accumulating 1000 Kudos during Djinn's Wish with Mute equipped would result in the music cutting out entirely.

Trivia[]

  • Gibril and Carrera's abnormal Skill Image Pulse quotes are a reference to scrapped plans to add them to the game as a dual boss. All the DLC Image Pulse pack characters were considered for potential tag battles, but for several reasons only Merak and Teseo were implemented.[1]
  • The descriptions of Moebius' image pulses can be deciphered into meaningful messages.
    • ">DG &D X>DD:" can be translated into "LET ME SLEEP"
    • "VK^C Z %FKBNG VJCJFD" can be translated into "FIND A BRIGHT FUTURE"
  • Gran Torta is the only boss from the mainline Gunvolt series without an Image Pulse.
  • Despite Image Pulses being based on Gunvolt's memories in the story, in gameplay there exist Image Pulses of characters with appearances that Gunvolt has never seen, such as the non-Armed appearances of Asroc, Desna, Ghauri, and Fake Zonda, Nori with a suitcase, and pre-fusion Mytyl with her eyes open, as well as the bonus Image Pulse "GV?" which changes Gunvolt into a form never seen in the story.
  • The concept of Image Pulse likely stems from the cut skill Shadowstriker (電影招雷, Thunder Shadow Summon) in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, in which GV summons copies of himself. The Japanese name of the track that plays when getting IPs is "電影想起リコレクション, Thunder Shadow Remembrance (Recollection)", and the other cut skill in GV2, Arc Unleash, was also brought back in a new form in GV3. It is speculated that before being cut the two skills were meant to be acquired via Azure Spirits, since there are two GV stages without them in GV2.
  • The Card-en-Ciel profile for Demerzel states that he also possesses the ability to use Image Pulse, which he uses against Copen and Lola during the climax of Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX.
