Gunvolt Chronicles, known in Japan as White Steel X (白き鋼鉄の
While the English name "Gunvolt Chronicles" implies a general spinoff series, as indicated by the Japanese title it is in truth a series purely focused on Copen.
About
While it is very similar to the main Azure Striker Gunvolt series in gameplay and graphics, there are some key differences:
- iX is directed by main series scenario writer Toshiaki Tai instead of the main series director Yoshihisa Tsuda, although Tsuda did supervise iX1.
- iX games are categorized as just "Action" genre games, unlike the main series which is categorized as "Light Novel 2D Action" in Japanese; iX forgoes having Story Mode+ (mid-stage dialogue) in favor of focusing on the action.
- The main series is considered Inti Creates' flagship series and has many staff members involved in character and boss battle conception, but iX has a more conventional development process with the director and character designer deciding things. It takes 4 months on average to settle on each main series boss character's actions, but iX ones take an average of only 2 weeks. Also, while Azure Striker Gunvolt can be delayed until the team is satisfied since it's the flagship series, as a "normal" title iX absolutely must meet the deadline even if it means cutting content.[2]
- While the main series tries (and mostly fails[2]) to appeal to young boys, iX is designed with adults in mind.[6]
- Although the Japanese Inti Creates Twitter account used hashtags for the main series (#gunvolt #ガンヴォルト) during promotion of iX1,[7] starting with iX2 promotion and continuing into Card-en-Ciel a new hashtag #白き鋼鉄のX was created and used instead.[8][9]
Also of note is that both iX games were made to buy time for development of Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, which for years was struggling to make real progress due to uncertainty about Kirin's gameplay.
