"I swear on these muscles that I will make amends!"
—Cayman, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3
[2]
Cayman "The Iron Delinquent" is one of the berserk Adepts in Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, appearing as the boss of the mission Pride & Battle (Old Capital Temple).
Following his defeat, he joins the Sumeragi Group's Bureau of Dragon Saviors, gaining a one diamond rank. He appears in the mission Sandstorm, battling the Aspis when it first emerges, and later has off screen participation by isolating strong foes with his power.
His Septima is Duelist, which forces the opponents into a fair and square infight and produces other effects.

Adept with the Septima "Duelist," Cayman excels at fighting up close and personal.
He's a delinquent with a strong sense of duty who spends his free time training.
Cayman seeks out strong opponents to battle one-on-one and prove his mettle.
Though he's always dressed in a school uniform, he doesn't currently attend classes. To hear him tell it, it's a "true man's uniform."[2]

Appearance[]
In his masked form, he wears a gray suit under black armor with red and white accents with a ring on his back that connects to his shoulders with heads identical to his hands from which he can breathe fire. His boots also look like these heads and they also seem to produce flames.
In his human form, he has brown hair, blue eyes and wears a black cap with golden details torn in the front, a red shirt with white bottoms under a black coat with golden shoulder pads and black pants with a golden belt buckle and sandals.

Personality[]
Cayman is the very definition of a "muscle head"; obsessed with training, improve his physique and overall speaking in physical culturism terms. Cayman is very passionate about his activities and spends most of his time training. Portraying somewhat of a "machismo" persona, Cayman speaks in rough ways with exaggerated masculine mannerisms. This goes doubly true after going berserk, deciding to break into a heavily guarded temple purely for training.
Despite being a delinquent, Cayman is a respectful and honorable individual, feeling ashamed of going berserk and causing trouble and being more than willing to join the Dragon Saviors to make up for his rampage. Cayman enjoys the idea of fighting strong opponents and will seek duels whenever possible, regularly forcing duels during the line of duty through his Septima, which allows him to isolate powerful threats from the rest of the team. Cayman's fighting style focuses in direct brute force close combat, and by his own volition refuses to take advantage of weak points. At the same time he feels dismayed whenever his foes do not engage in the same kind of fair one on one he seeks, as seen when he confronted an amorphous adversary which could split into several lesser entities.
Cayman values those with courage and determination, growing fond of Gunvolt whom he believed to be "manly" despite his canine appearance as he could correctly discern GV's character. Shiron in particular views Cayman as his role model of the "man" he seeks to be, even addressing him as his "Sensei". Cayman is somewhat puzzled by Shiron's admiration, but determines himself to be as masculine as he can to serve as a proper example, even though he is in his own words still training to be better.
Despite Cayman's preference for physical activity, he can still make room for more intellectual practices, such as jigsaw puzzles.
Powers and Abilities[]
Cayman holds the power of the Duelist Septima, which forces opponents into dueling him. Duelist also allows Cayman to alter the battlefield and set restrictions or other phenomena, such as disabling the use of walls as a jumping platform, cause a magnetic force which attracts his foes closer to him, or create a space in which Cayman and his opponent are isolated and suffer damage if they step out of boundaries.
Cayman combines these traits along with close quarter combat and overall use of martial arts and brute force which he prefers, giving him a significant advantage against his adversaries, particularly more mobile ones. Duelist might also seemingly boost Cayman's already strong physique with additional power, allowing him to shatter concrete with his fists, jump to high altitudes and deliver punishing drop kicks which catapult their targets away, dash with such strength that he is encased in flames and even incinerate the ground, and stomp the ground with such violence that he can produce exploding shockwaves.
Boss Battle Skills[]
In Hard Mode, if the player is too close to Cayman, he may perform a lunging knee attack at the player.
Skill | Description |
---|---|
Cayman stomps the floor up to four times, creating explosions that travel across the floor. He may either create slow or fast moving explosions. In Normal Mode, Cayman only uses this attack on battle phase three.
In Hard Mode, if the player's too close to him, he may perform a variation of the attack where he creates one big explosion that travels a small distance in front of him and knocks the player back. |
Cayman jumps into the air before smashing down on the ground, creating two explosions to his sides that throw up two rocks each. The rocks can be destroyed by Kirin's sword slashes or GV's Flashfield.
In Hard Mode, the explosions throw up 3-4 rocks each instead. |
Cayman jumps and bursts straight towards the player engulfed in flames.
In Hard Mode, Cayman takes less time to charge after jumping, and he also sets the floor behind him on fire when doing so. If the player gets behind him while he's preparing the attack, he'll still perform the attack in the player's direction anyway. |
Cayman does a fiery uppercut into the air. He usually follows this up with "Get Back Here!".
In Normal Mode, Cayman only uses this attack in battle phase two onwards. In Hard Mode, battle phase two onwards, he may instead follow this up with "I'll Smash You!!" |
This attack is always executed after a "Got You!". Cayman does a flaming diagonal kick in the same direction he stopped in midair.
In Hard Mode, Cayman always kicks in the player's direction. |
Cayman puts blue seals on the walls that prevent the player from jumping on or holding on to them. In Normal Mode, he'll respond with this move if the player avoided one of his attacks by jumping up the wall; otherwise, he'll use it when the first third of his health bar is halfway depleted. In Hard Mode, he uses this at the start of the battle instead. |
Cayman puts red stamps on the wall that pull the player closer to Cayman. The farther away the player is from Cayman, the stronger the force of the pull. He uses this when his second health bar is halfway depleted, or at the start of battle phase two in Hard Mode. The effects of this move disappear when Cayman uses Duelist Dimension. |
( |
Cayman's special skill. He jumps to the center of the room and forms a ring that covers a small part of the room. If the player moves outside of the ring, they start taking damage until they move back inside the ring. Cayman himself also limits his movement and attacks to the inside of the ring. |

The concept of Cayman is a funny banchō (Japanese delinquent). Banchō in this kind of world? I thought about it, but I decided to go straight with a banchō while checking the status of banchō in the science fiction world. Personally, I like it a lot. The polo shirt does a nice job.
I thought it would be no good for the banchō to become a Primal Dragon and no longer be a banchō, so the image is kept even while berserk, but the motif itself is a hydra. The limbs have four similar dragon head designs, as does the giant back collar.
The younger staff also had the idea of grouping or connecting the dragon heads together, and the more you fight, the stronger they get as they accumulate damage! The idea was so interesting that I borrowed it. It was difficult to incorporate it into the specifications, and in the end (Cayman's) ability was completely different, but I think it turned out well in terms of design.

Trivia[]
- Cayman's motif is the Major Arcana VII, The Chariot, and hydras,[4] matching the Arcana theme of other Gunvolt 3 characters and draconic theme of the Berserk Adepts.
- The number of heads possessed by the mythological Hydra varies by source, but Alcaeus (the first known written source, c. 600 BCE) described it as having nine heads. Cayman's armor has eight designs on it that look like dragon heads - four on his back, two on his hands, and two on his feet - and counting his actual head, this totals nine heads.
- If Cayman's actual head is not counted, his armor has a total of eight heads. (Relevantly, after he joins the Dragon Saviors, his armor loses the draconic mask on his actual head.) This makes him resemble the Yamata no Orochi, an eight-headed dragon from Japanese mythology.
- Cayman might be named after the Porsche Cayman. His Japanese name, Camion, is French, Spanish, and Romanian for "truck". This matches the car theme naming of the other Berserk Adepts, Black Badge, Shiron (Chiron), and Apollo.
- Given BB's references to Death of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, combined with Shiron and Apollo's potential references to Conquest and Famine, it's speculated that War may be another motif of Cayman's.
- Different early concepts of Cayman's transformed design had strong resemblances to Carrera and Jota's, similar to one of BB's resembling Jota's while one of Serpentine's resembled Elise's. It is unknown if this has any significance, as none of their concept art notes discuss the subject.
- Both designs incorporated the original ability concept where, as mentioned in the designer comments, Cayman would power up as he took hits. In the Carrera-like concept, arm armor parts would grow in size and attack power, detaching from his body and lowering his defense, and then expend their energy by attacking and revert to normal. Coincidentally(?), this ability would be similar to Carrera's Binding Might skill, in which the size and power of the scrap fist he launches is affected by how much damage he takes while charging it up.
- In one concept, the heads on Cayman's back talked. This was a reference to the stand Sex Pistols from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
- Given the name and abilities of his Septima, Duelist, it's also (more loosely) speculated that another basis is the Yugioh card Last Turn, which forces the duel to be settled by a one-on-one monster card confrontation and depicts the cards Yamata Dragon and Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi in battle.
- Yamata Dragon is based on the Yamata no Orochi, which Cayman's design may also reference.
- Hi no Kagutsuchi is also the name of Viper's glaive, who is also a delinquent who wields a flame-based Septima. Additionally, in the 2020 Digi Games Expo demo Cayman appears in the Abandoned Factory, a stage with flames and explosions similar to Viper's stage Biochem Plant.

- The Berserk Adepts' designs may pay homage to the Four Guardians from the Mega Man Zero series, with Cayman referencing Fighting Fefnir. Cayman's obsession with training is also similar to the Model F (Fefnir) Pseudoroid Fistleo.
